Funk, R&B and soul guitar lessons in Charlottesville

Groove first: the right hand keeps moving in sixteenths, and the chords stay small and high on the neck.

Funk and soul guitar is rhythm playing in its purest form. The guitar locks with the drums and bass, plays short chord fragments rather than full shapes, and leaves space. It sounds intricate, but most of it comes from a few small voicings and one well-trained strumming hand.

The funk strumming hand

The picking hand moves down and up in sixteenth notes without stopping, and the fretting hand decides which strokes sound: pressing the strings makes a chord, relaxing them makes a muted "scratch". Accents fall where the groove needs them, with a strong pull toward the first beat of the bar. Practicing this against a metronome at a slow tempo is the single most useful funk exercise.

Small chords, high on the neck

  • Ninth chords: the dominant ninth (E9 is the classic) is the sound of funk rhythm guitar.
  • Triads on the top strings: three-note shapes on the G, B and high E strings stay out of the bass and keyboards' range.
  • Double stops: pairs of notes, often in sixths or fourths, slid or hammered into place, are the backbone of soul guitar fills.
  • Single-note riffs: short muted lines that double or answer the bass.

R&B and neo-soul colors

Modern R&B and neo-soul use richer chords: major sevenths, minor ninths and elevenths, often embellished with hammer-ons and slides inside the chord. The playing is quieter and more legato than funk, with a clean tone and a touch of chorus.

Bass and keys

On bass, funk adds slap and pop technique and leans on octave patterns; bass lessons cover it. On keys, the same chords appear as electric piano voicings, covered in piano and keyboard lessons.

How lessons approach funk and soul

Bill writes out the songs you bring, starting with the main groove, and plays the bass or second guitar part so your rhythm has something to lock against. Timing is worked on before speed: a slow, steady groove is worth more than a fast, loose one.

Questions

Do I need a special guitar for funk?

No. A guitar with bright single-coil pickups helps, but any electric with a clean amp will do. A wah pedal is the one effect strongly linked to funk.

Is funk guitar hard for beginners?

The chords are small and easy to fret. The challenge is the strumming hand, and that improves fastest with short, regular practice to a click.
